Our generation is the luckiest in terms of quality content available for us to watch. Our television sets, laptops, tablets and even mobile phones have been graced by some of the best shows in the history of television. Television shows nowadays are getting the creative freedom, financial backing with huge budgets and the audiences on par and even more than the cinema. One of these shows is Game of Thrones. It is one of, if not the best TV show ever made and the fans have expectations accordingly, regarding the quality and storytelling of the show. If fan reactions are any clue to the quality of the latest season of Game of Thrones, the showrunners have failed to deliver and have left the fans furious.
Now, ahead of the final episode of season 8 of Game of Thrones more than 1 million people, around 1,070,000 at the time of writing of this article, have signed a petition with the title “Remake Game of Thrones Season 8 with competent writers.” If you also want to sign this petition, you can do so by clicking here. The main concern raised by majority of the fans, who have signed the petition, is the inability of the showrunners, David Benioff and D. B. Weiss to conjure good content for the show without the guidance of George R. R. Martin’s series of A Song of Ice and Fire novels. The showrunners ran out of books to base the show upon at the end of Season 5 and they’ve been relying on their own writing ever since. While Season 6 was a hit with the fans, they haven’t been pleased with the shortened Seasons 7 and 8.
Some of the reactions of the signing fans are compiled below:
“This series deserves a final season that makes sense. Subvert my expectations and make it happen, HBO!”
“Let’s be real, they’re never going to remake it, but I still signed the petition. I hope D&D feel ashamed for what they turned this once beautiful show into, when they see our collective disapproval.”
“Total dissatisfaction. Wait almost two years for The Night King to perish in a single episode without much meaning. More drama was missing. Daenerys does not deserve to end up as evil. Throughout the series and after each season ended with strength giving and giving vigor to each episode of all kinds; emotional, moral, heroic, gallantry, authority, example to follow, etc. It is not fair that they destroy their image in a few episodes”
“I understand it’s GOT but don’t trash 8 yrs of character building for what they think will shock and awe us. It sucks.”
These are just a few of the views shown by the fans on the petition forum. So, what are the reasons behind this uproar? What has left the fans so dissatisfied with the show they once loved? Here are a few reasons people have hated the final season of the show so far:
The showrunners announced after the completion of season 6 that the last 2 seasons of the show would consist of 7 and 6 episodes, respectively and insisted that it was all they needed to finish off one of the most remarkable TV shows ever. However, with fewer episodes they have failed to deliver justifying ends to several storylines.
Rushed and non sensible deaths of major characters
Two of the cleverest men in westeros, men who had seen so many Kings and Queens, as well as orchestrated endless schemes and yet no harm ever came to them, Varys and Littlefinger, both dies sudden undeserved deaths (from the point of view of the story and not the characters). Cersie dies buried in a rubble after executing Missandei in front of the mother of dragons, so did Jaime who had found love in the arms of Ser Brienne of Tarth, what was the point of knighting her and cultivating a relationship with her, if he was going to return to the disastrous relationship with his sister. Oh, and he killed Euron Greyjoy on his way to Cersie. Then there is the case of the golden company, the most deadly and fearsome army of mercenaries money can buy, destroyed in one fell swoop. It all felt super rushed.
Also, Shouldn’t Jon have spent a moment with his trusted ally and dear pet Ghost? I know, its not a death but again, not enough time for the end of a major character arc.
Dragons: Powerful but maybe not?
The treatment of dragons by the show has been haphazard at best. In one episode Rhaegal is being killed by Euron Greyjoy’s fleet with Daenerys fleeing on the back of Drogon and her Armada destroyed. In the next, daenerys destroys all the scorpions along with the Grejoy fleet and the golden company within 5 minutes of entering the battlefield and then proceeds to to burn the whole of King’s Landing with Drogon. Where was she when her other dragon was being killed by the iron island maniac. Yes, riding beside him on his brothers back yet could do nothing.
Night King, who?
The build up to the show since this very first episode has shown the night King and his army of the white walkers and wights to be the ultimate danger to the seven kingdoms and they are shown to be in the last season as well but the death of the Night King at the hands of Arya Stark, no matter how satisfying, left people asking questions.
Why didn’t the white walkers do anything? Why weren’t there more epic battles between the main characters and the white walkers or the Night King himself? How did Arya get to the Night King undetected?
Season 5 episode 8 “Hardhome” did way better in this regard and is one of the best episodes of the show. Why? Because they didn’t rush into killing all of the army within one episode.
What have you done, Dany?
So, Tyrion does everything in his power to get her the throne, even sells out Varys and call for her to be merciful. But what does Dany do? She goes off killing thousands by burning them alive on the back of her dragon. While Dany breaking bad has been foreshadowed throughout previous seasons, but this was not the way to do it.
What was the point of it all? The was was won, the enemy forces had surrendered and destroyed and most importantly innocents, including children even, did nothing to her. Yet, she burned them all. “Burn them all” like her father, the Mad King did.
